Gopi Geet Episode 1 – Who are the Gopis

Gopi Geet: Exploring the Divine Love of the Gopis

Devotion to God is a conscious choice we make, not something that happens automatically.

The Gopis: Models of Pure Devotion

The Bhagavad Gita is a revered scripture within Hinduism, known for its profound wisdom. Sage Ved Vyas, who also authored the Mahabharata, wrote the Bhagavad Gita. Within this scripture, the Gopi Geet describes the Gopis' love for Krishna. These verses are sung in Kanak Manjari Chand, a beautiful and evocative language.

The Significance of Gopis in Spiritual Life

The path to spiritual fulfillment lies in devotion. The Gopis are considered ideal devotees, their love for Krishna unmatched. According to the Brahma Purana, even Brahma, the creator God, aspired to achieve the level of the Gopis' devotion. Great spiritual figures like Narada Muni have emphasized the importance of studying the Gopis' love for Krishna.

Meanings of Gopi

The Sanskrit word "Gopi" has multiple meanings. One interpretation suggests it derives from "gopniya" meaning "hidden." Similar to a flame sheltered within a lamp, the Gopis' love for Krishna burns brightly but remains hidden from the outside world. Another meaning comes from the verse "Gobhihi Indriyani Vibhanti Krishna Ras, iti Gopihi" which translates to "The one who savors the divine essence (Ras) of Krishna with all their senses is a Gopi."

Gopis: Experiencing the Divine Through All Senses

Unlike formless worshippers, the Gopis experience Krishna through all their senses. They see his beauty, hear his flute, touch his feet, and experience his divine fragrance. The Gopis completely absorb this divine essence, like a sweet that soaks up syrup.

The level of God's grace corresponds to the depth of a devotee's love. The Gopis' immense love allows them to fully experience the divine nectar of Krishna's presence.

Mastery Over the Senses

Another interpretation of "Gopi" suggests it means "one who controls their senses." True devotion requires mastery over our senses to focus completely on God.

The Gopi Geet: A Song of Profound Love

The Gopi Geet is a beautiful expression of devotion by the Gopis, the ultimate devotees of Lord Krishna. These verses are found within the Bhagavad Gita, a foundational scripture.

Conquer the Mind

We dissipate a large portion of our thought power and energy in combating people whom we perceive as enemies and potentially harmful to us. The Vedic scriptures say the biggest enemies—lust, anger, greed, envy, illusion, etc.—reside in our own mind. For those who have conquered the mind, it is their friend. For those who have failed to do so, the mind works like an enemy.
