Is there any scriptural mention of Radha Rani or is it only a personal opinion?

Question:  I have heard in the Pravachans (discourses) of many saints where they say that no description of Radha Rani exists in the Bhagavatam written by Maharshi Ved Vyas.  I want to know whether there is any scriptural mention of Radha Rani.  Or is it only a personal opinion?

Answer by Swamiji:  Your question addresses a widespread misnomer in the minds of many people.  The nature of your question and its importance demands that detailed evidence be given from the scriptures for the benefit of everyone.
We shall come to the Shreemad Bhagavatam later.  First of all, let us visit the other scriptures.  Let us begin with the eternal Vedas, and see if they mention Radha Rani.
idaṁ hyanvojasāsutaṁ rādhānāṁ pate pivā tvasya girvaṇaḥ (Ṛig Veda)
"O Shree Krishna, Husband of Radha!  Just as the gopīs worship You, the Ved mantras also worship You. By them, drink Som Ras."
vibhaktāraṁ havāmahe vasoschitrasya rādhasaḥ savitāraṁ nṛichaksasam (Ṛig Ved)
"O All-knowing Witness seated in everyone's hearts, who took Radha away from the gopīs (during the Mahārās)!  We call You for our protection."
tvaṁ nṛichaksaṁ vṛiṣhabhānupoorvīḥ kṛiṣhṇāsvagne aruṣhovibhāhi (Ṛig Veda)
In this mantra, the name of Vrishabhanu, father of Radha is mentioned, leaving no scope for doubt or interpretation on what the word "Radha" means.
yasyā reṇuṁ pādayorviśhvabhartā dharate moordhnī (Atharva Vediya Rādhikopaniṣhad)
"Radha is that Entity, the dust of whose lotus feet the Master of the Universe places on His head."
Next, let us come to the Puraṇas.  Ved Vyas, who is the writer of the Shreemad Bhagavatam, has written seventeen other Puraṇas as well, and Radha Rani is mentioned in six of them.
yathā rādhā priyā viṣhṇoḥ (Padma Purāṇa)
rādhā vāmāṁśha saṁbhootā mahālakṣhmīrprakīrtitā (Nārad Purāṇa)
tatrāpi rādhikā śhaśhvat   (Ādi Purāṇa)
rukmiṇī dwāravatyāṁcha rādhā vṛindāvane vane (Matsya Purāṇa)
rādhnoti sakalān kāmān tena rādhā prakīrtitaḥ (Devī Bhāgavat Purāṇa)
ādau rādhāṁ samuchchārya paśhchātkṛiṣhṇaṁ parātparam (Brahma Vaivartak Purāṇa)
Finally, let us come to the Shreemad Bhagavatam.  This scripture was spoken by Shukadev Paramhans to Parikshit.  Shukadev is an eternal associate of Radha Rani.  He is a Leela Shuk, who takes the form of a parrot, and recites wonderful things in Her Divine abode, Golok.  His love for Radha Rani is so much that if he takes Her Name, he faints for six months.  Since, Parikshit was cursed to be bitten by a snake in seven days, Shukadev had to complete the Bhagavatam within that period, and so he did not take Radha Rani's name directly.  But he made indirect mention of Her in many places.  In the Radhopanishad, 28 names of Radha Rani have been mentioned, including Gopi, Ramā, and Shree.  Radha Rani is mentioned by some of these names in the Bhagavatam, for example:
kāmayāmaha etasya śhrīmatpādarajaḥ śhriyaḥ
kuchakuṅkumagandhāḍhyaṁ moordhnā voḍhuṁ gadābhṛitaḥ  (Śhrīmad Bhāgavatam 10.83.42)
"We want the dust of the lotus feet of Radha, whose kuṅkum is on the feet of Shree Krishna (because She placed His feet on Herself)."  Here the word "Shree" has been used for Radha.  If you say that "Shree" means Mahalakshmi, it is not applicable here because the Queens of Dwarika were themselves the descensions of Mahalakshmi.  Why would they hanker for the dust of Mahalakshmi's lotus feet?  The word "Shree" here refers to Radha.
reme rameśho vrajasundarībhiryathārbhakaḥ svapratibimba vibhramaḥ  (Śhrīmad Bhāgavatam 10.33.16)
"The Master of Ramā did Rās with the gopīs."  Here the word "Ramā" has been used for Radha.  Ramā can also mean Lakshmi, but that is not the usage here, since Vishnu, the Master of Lakshmi, does not do the Rās leela.
ākṣhiptāchittāḥ pramadā ramāpatestāstā vicheṣhṭā jagṛihustadātimikāḥ (Śhrīmad Bhāgavatam 10.30.2)
When Shree Krishna vanished during the Mahārās, the gopīs lamented and reached the state of Mahābhāv.  They began imitating the pastimes of Ramāpati, the husband of Ramā.  Again the word Ramā in the above verse, has come for Radha.  It could not mean Lakshmi since Vishnu was not involved in this leela.
yāṁ gopīmanayat kṛiṣhṇo (Śhrīmad Bhāgavatam 10.30.35)
"Shree Krishna took one Gopī with Him and disappeared from the Mahārās."  Gopī is also one of the names of Radha.
anayāridhato noonaṁ bhagavānīśhvaro harīḥ (Śhrīmad Bhāgavatam 10.30.28)
"This Gopī has performed great devotion to Shree Krishna.  Hence He has taken Her alone with Him."
Apart from these, Radha is mentioned in many other scriptures.  But in the context of this question, let these quotations suffice.

Letter from Swamiji on Reaching USA for the 2011 Tour

Dear Devotees,
The last five months in India whizzed by in a whirlwind of activity, which was so fast-paced that it did not leave much time to communicate with the members of the Google group, Facebook, and Twitter.  I reached the USA yesterday, 30th March 2011, and spent the day helping with preparations for the tour ahead.   This will be my longest stay in the USA—a full seven months—and will include lecture series in 24 cities and 3 retreats.  I am looking forward to meeting all the wonderful devotees who have been in touch with me over the last few years, and am eager to meet many more new ones.
I am thankful to God and Guru for utilizing an undeserving soul as myself as Their tiny instrument for propagating Their glories and teaching the path to Divine Love.  The life of a preacher has been a very absorbing, engaging and fulfilling one, and after two-and-a-half decades in this service, I look back with satisfaction that I have tried my best, and look forward with hope and optimism about the work yet to be done.
The preparation for this year’s tour has required the combined efforts of many people, and I would like to convey my gratitude to all of them.  I would also like to thank all the volunteers of JKYog who have been devotedly contributing their time and energy in running the Satsang centers and Bal-Mukund classes in their cities.  My heartfelt appreciations also go out to the dedicated team that takes care of the administrative responsibilities of JKYog.
We all are fortunate to be worshipping the Lord in His sweetest forms as Radha Krishna, under the guidance of Kripaluji Maharaj who is the fifth original Jagadguru in history, on the most Blissful path of Bhaktiyog.  Let this faith spur our enthusiasm to ever-increasing heights, as we strive forward on the path to God.  One poet Saint put it very beautifully:
Jina khoja tina paiyan, gehere pani paith.
Main bauri dooban dari, rahi kinare baith.
“Those souls were able to find God who, with faith, dove deep into the ocean.  Those, who lacked the faith and were scared of drowning, remained sitting at the edge.”  Let this be the motto for this year, as we endeavor to increase our dedicated efforts in personal sadhana and service to the Lord.

With best wishes,
Swami Mukundananda

How to train our mind that there is no happiness in the material world?

Question:  My question is about how to teach and train mind that there is no happiness in the material world.  My mind is revolting while accepting that there is no happiness in material things. Is it ok if we will go through these circumstances and get realization that there is no happiness?  For example, there is no happiness in consuming alcohol.  So, is it ok if we first test alcohol and then get to realize that there is no happiness? Without going through something how we will know that there is no happiness in it?

Answer by Swamiji:  There are innumerable things in the world, and each thing has endless varieties.  If you go by the modus operandi of experiencing everything first, your whole life will pass in the endeavor.  Besides, is there any formula regarding how long you will consume alcohol before coming to the conclusion that there is no happiness in it?  There are people who run after money all their lives, and yet do not decide that it does not have the happiness they are seeking.  Again, if you finally do come to the conclusion that the world is not a place of happiness, but the mind doubts whether there is happiness in God, then what will you do?  You wouldn't be able to demand to see and experience God before concluding that He is an ocean of Divine Bliss.
As human beings, God has bestowed us with subtle intellects that can make this decision even without experience.  Broadly, the intellect of living beings can be classified into four categories:

1. The lowest is the intellect of an insect.  It is attracted to the fire.  On coming near the flame, it gets burnt.  But it does not learn, and commits the same mistake again and again.
2. The intellect of a cat is subtler.  If it sits on a hot plate, it learns from its experience.  In future, it even refuses to sit on a cold plate, in apprehension that it may get burnt.
3. The intellect of sheep is even subtler.  They have never been attacked by a wolf.  But the moment they see a wolf, they perceive impending danger and run for their lives.
4. The intellect of humans is even subtler. Merely by intellectual discrimination, without seeing or experiencing, they are expected to reach the conclusion that there is no happiness in the world.

Actually, everyone has had experience of the world to a lesser or greater extent.  We made the desires of the senses and put in great effort to satisfy them.  What was the experience?  For a moment the desire was quenched, but then it arose again with redoubled intensity.  This is the nature of worldly desires, whether they are the teeny-weeny cravings that you have made innumerable times in your lives or the bigger desires that loom more largely in your mind.  The principle is exactly the same.  So we should utilize our experience to date, to reach a blanket conclusion about the nature of all worldly desires.  That is what God expects us to do, and that is the instruction of the scriptures.

upāsate puruṣham ye hyākāmāste śhukrametadivartanti dhīrāḥ |  (Mundakopanishad)

Secret of Spiritual Sadhana

Bhajan by Swami Mukundananda Ji

Secrets of God's action!

Question:
I have many questions from the Puranas.  Why did Shree Krishna do the Maharaas?  Why did Shree Krishna leave the gopis and go to Dwarika?  Why did Ram hide and kill Baali?  Why does Shiv ji wear a snake around His neck and a apply ashes on His body?  Why does Vishnu Bhagavan sleep on a bed made of a snake?

Answer from Swamiji:
Let us systematically reach such an answer to your question that will resolve all of them simultaneously, and any future ones that may arise.  There are two kinds of personalities in the world:
1.      Those who have not yet attained Bliss, and are hankering for it.  All of the materially bound souls fall in this category.
2.      Those who are relishing perfect Divine Bliss, and have no need to look for it outside.  God and the God-realized Saints fall in this category.
Now look at their actions.
1.      The first class of personalities is not yet fulfilled themselves; they are searching for Bliss. The motivation behind their every action will be their own happiness.  Even if they serve others, it will be for their happiness.
2.      The second class of personalities is already experiencing Divine Bliss.  They have nothing to attain, and nowhere to reach.  So either they will do nothing, or if they ever do anything, it will be for the welfare of others - to help others attain Bliss - and not for themselves.
So the simple answer to all your questions regarding why any Avatar did anything, is that it was for the welfare of the souls.  Now it is a different matter that you may not be able to understand what the welfare in that particular action was.  But that should not be surprising to us!  After all, how large is God's intellect and how small is ours, in comparison?
Suppose a primary school student were to go to Albert Einstein and ask him how he arrived at his equation E=mc2?   Einstein could question him, "Do you polar integration?"
"No Sir!"
"Do you know Calculus?"
"I have never heard of it, Sir!"
"At least do you know Algebra?"
"No!  All I know is how to count two plus two equal to four on my fingers."
Einstein would probably say, "In that case I cannot explain my equation of the Theory of Relativity to you."
"Really, you cannot explain it to me?  That means your theory is wrong."  If the boy were to say that, how presumptuous and inaccurate a statement that would be!
Similarly, the Maharaas of Shree Krishna is in the tenth canto of the Shreemad Bhagavatam.  We must begin understanding spirituality from grade one.  First, from the Bhagavad Geeta, we must understand that we are the soul and not the body, and hence we must learn to detach ourselves from the world.  Then, start relishing Divine love from the Bhagavatam, for where the Bhagavad Geeta ends, the Bhagavatam begins.  The Maharaas is in the tenth canto of the Bhagavatam, and so it is a post doctoral topic.  If we want to jump straight there without having even understood that we are the body, it will be equally presumptuous.
People ask me about Ram hiding and killing Baali.  I ask them in return that how do they know Ram killed Baali in that manner.  They say it is written in the Ramayan.  I ask them that if they believe what is written in the Ramayan to be true, then they must also accept that Ram is God, since that is also written in it.  And if they do accept Ram as God, there can be no doubt, for Ram cannot make any mistakes.
The best way to derive benefit from the pastimes of God and the Saints described in the Puranas is to not use the intellect in analyzing them.  Simply relish them by attaching the mind.  Use the intellect to understand that there is no happiness in the world, so that you can develop detachment from it.

(Prem Ras Madira)
Shree Krishna gave viraha (separation) to the Gopis of Braj and went to Dwarika.  There He stayed with 16,108 queens.  Due to this, few people think that, love of the queens towards Shree Krishna was greater than that of Gopis, otherwise why would He leave them for the queens? But, Shree Kripaluji Maharaj says that it is not so in the realm of Divine love.  In the realm of Divine love, viraha bhaw is the highest bhaw and since love of Gopis was of highest level they got separation from Him not the queens.  Swamij deals with the topic of viraha bhaw in reference to the above padh where Shree Maharajji is describing the longing of Gopis to have darshan of Shree Krishna.

Swamiji takes the topic of Viraha bhaw further and delves into 10 different stages of bhaw bhakti, in reference to the above padh. In the padh, Gopis are urging Shree Krishna not to go to Mathura.  They are saying, "You are source of our life, if you go away how are we supposed to live?"

Why did all-wise God created different religions?

Some religions, like Islam, serve no good purpose.  They mislead people and serve to increase their confusions.  Their followers, rather than elevating themselves, degrade themselves.  Why did the all-wise God create such religions in different parts of the world?
Answer by Swamiji:
Our judgments are often based on inadequate data and understanding.  All the prophets in history delivered their message in accordance with the time, place and circumstance in which they were preaching.  Without understanding this principle, we could jump to rash judgments on their teachings.
The Hindu scriptures declare that the Buddha was God Himself.  And yet He preached a religion that accepts neither the concept of God nor the soul. "Sacchita pariyodapanam etam buddhanushasanam".  The emphasis is only on cleansing your mind. Shree Kripaluji Maharaj explains that at the time of Gautam Buddha, people were over-indulging in the ritualistic aspect of the Vedas. They were engaging in animal sacrifice.  The Buddha preached a philosophy that helped the people rise from the platform they were at. Buddhism was the perfect philosophy for the people in that situation at that time.  Now, if we were to say that Buddhism is a bad religion because it does not mention the existence of God, how far from the truth we would be.
Similarly, Christianity too may seem elementary in comparison to the Vaishnav philosophy, yet it has served humankind for two millenniums. If we read the writings of Thomas Kempis, St. John of the Cross and St Francis of Assissi, we will feel humbled before their fervor for devotion, their zeal for preaching, and their complete intoxication for God.
The same holds true for many Sufi saints, like Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi, and Moinuddin Chisti.  When I was a child, there was a Hindu girl in our neighborhood who used to read the Namaz, without ever having learnt it from anyone (she forgot it by her sixth year).  It is possible that she was a good Muslim in her last life, and God arranged for her to continue the journey by giving her an appropriate Hindu birth in this life.  So God alone is aware of the full importance of Islam in the development of humankind, and its impact on the development of culture, architecture, literature, music, etc.
A religion carries an entire civilization on its back for ages and ages. How then can we reject Islam as a bad religion?  The Bible says, "Judge not lest ye be judged". The beauty of our Vedic scriptures is that they give us a broad vision of humankind, where we do not look upon ourselves as going to heaven and all others as going to hell. Jagadguru Shree Kripaluji Maharaj shows this spirit by quoting from all the religious traditions of the world.  Shree Maharajji also says in the Prem Ras Siddhant that often followers of one path consider themselves to be superior, and look down upon all other religious organizations, Gurus and denominations as being inferior.  This is a Naamaparadh, or a spiritual transgression.

Invitation to submit questions for book on spiritual dialectics!

Dear Devotees,
In philosophy, Dialectics is a method of investigating the nature of the Truth through discussions in the form of questions and answers.
Socrates used the dialectic process to instruct his students, and he vigorously encouraged them to question existing beliefs.  Plato, his illustrious disciple, adopted the dialectical method in his famous book, "The Dialogues."  Another noted Greek philosopher, Aristotle, thought of dialectics as a search for the philosophical basis for science.
The German philosopher Hegel is often considered the father of Dialetics.  Hegel believed that the evolution of ideas occurs through a dialectical process—that is, any concept gives rise to its opposite viewpoint; we then resolve this conflict and reach a synthesis. The synthesis is at a higher level of truth than the first two views.
Karl Marx applied the concept of dialectics to social and economic processes, and called his theory, "Dialectical Materialism."  Immanuel Kant coined the term "Transcendental Dialectic" to express the way to go beyond the constraints of human rationality.
This system of analysis of the truth through questions and answers has also been repeatedly used in the Vedic literature.  It was the favorite technique of Divine descensions and great sages for imparting knowledge.  The dialogues of these great personalities with their students and disciples have been chronicled in the revealed scriptures, and the consequential reservoir of knowledge created by these discussions has satiated the thirst of innumerable seekers.
Shukadev Paramhans and King Parikshit
The most famous amongst these is the Bhagavad Geeta, which is a dialogue between Arjun and the Supreme Lord Shree Krishna.  Seeing his relatives and elders on the opposing side, in the battlefield of Kurukshetra, Arjun was confused about his duty.  Shree Krishna imparted Divine knowledge by answering his questions, to enlighten him with the Absolute Truth.
The great Sage Ved Vyas wrote the Shreemad Bhagavatam entirely in the dialectic form.  He included in it a number of dialogues, such as between Jada Bharat and Rahugan, Vidur and Maitreya, Uddhav and Shree Krishna, etc.  Shukadev Paramhans recited the Bhagavatam with all these dialogues to King Parikshit.  The Bhagavatam was then recited by Suta Goswami to Shaunak Muni, and he included the question-answers between Shukadev and Parikshit in it.  Finally, Ved Vyas again compiled the Bhagavatam, and added to it all the discussions between Suta and Shaunak as well.
The Dialectic process is also a part of many of the Upanishads.  The famous Kathopanishad is a dialogue between Nachiketa and Yamraj.  In the Prashnopanishad, the sage Pippalad is questioned by six pupils:
1.Sukesha, the son of Bharadwaja.  2. Satyakama, the son of Shibi.  3.
Sauryayanee, the descendant of Garga.  4. Kaushalya, the son of Ashwala.  5.Bhargava of the Bhrigu Gotra.  6. Kabandhi, the son of Katya.  The discussion with each of them forms a separate chapter of the Upanishad.
Another famous scripture based on the dialectic process is the Yoga Vasishtha.  This is dialogue between Lord Ram and his Spiritual preceptor Maharshi Vasishtha.  The question and answer system also makes up many chapters of the Ramayan, Mahabharat, and many other scriptures.
The “Khandan Mandan padhati” of lecturing is also based on the dialectic process.  Here, the speaker creates a doubt in the minds of the listeners, and then goes on resolve it.  The idea is that when the curiosity is aroused and then satisfied, the knowledge sinks deep in.
Instead, if the knowledge is given without initially creating a conflict in the minds of the listeners, it does not create the same impact.
Many devotees had requested for a book written in Question-Answer form that could help them resolve the innumerable doubts in their minds. We are about to begin work on this, and will first compile questions for this purpose.  We have access to a number of Q and A sessions conducted over the years, and also the questions asked via the website and this google group.
However, to make the book comprehensive, I would like to invite all of you once again to submit any questions that may come to your mind, as you traverse the spiritual path.
If they get included in the book, your questions will also benefit other seekers of the Truth like yourself. We will not print the name of the questioner without permission.

Your ever well-wisher,
Swami Mukundananda

Single Minded Devotion!

One of the most important requirements for spiritual progress is single minded devotion to God, i.e. Ananyata. 'Ananya' means 'no other', exclusive, or undivided devotion.

'Ananya Prem' means to love just one - God and nobody else. We have learnt earlier that there are three eternal truths: God, Soul and Maya (an eternal, cosmic and lifeless power of God). If a soul does not love God, then which 'other' entity does he love? It has to be people or objects under the influence of maya, since there is no fourth entity or realm for the soul to love. Souls who have not attained God as well as all other inanimate (material) objects are classified as mayic.

If an individual's mind is attached to anyone or anything other than God, then he will not be called as an 'Ananya' follower. Loving God alone is what ananyata means. Consider the honest and truthful Harishchandra. He never lied throughout his life. Hence, he was honored with the name, 'Satya' Harishchandra. If he had lied just once, then his honesty could be questioned. In the same way, even if we have 0.1% attachment (of the mind) for any person or material object, our devotion to God will not be exclusive or single minded.

This popular and simple shlok from the Puranas say:

tvameva mātā cha pitā tvameva,
tvameva bañdhuśhcha sakhā tvameva
tvameva vidyā draviṇam tvameva,
tvameva sarvam mam deva deva

This shlok reminds us to use the word 'only'. That means "You (God) are my real mother. You are my real father." The one who gave birth to me is not my real mother. She is the mother of this material body. You are a soul and your real mother, father everything is God, i.e. all your relationships are with God alone. The soul is spiritual by nature and its subject of interest is God, who is Divine. If anything other than the Divine enters the mind, it becomes an obstacle in reaching the state of 'exclusivity'.

ek bharoso ek bal, ek ās viśhvās
bhrātā bhartā cha bañdhuśhcha pitā cha me rāghavaḥ
more sabaī ek tum svāmī, dīnbandhu ur antaryāmī

Lakshman said "O Ram! You are my father, You are my mother, You are my brother, You are my everything. The rest (Lord Dashratha), are not mine. Those relations are material and confined to this material body." This is such a strong statement that Lakshman said to Shree Ram who was an embodiment and personification of dignity and respect. Devotion and respect to mother, father and elders were
his principle ideals. But Lakshman said, "I am not ready to accept this principle and my ideal is only one, Shree Ram. My material father and mother are growing old and will soon die. They are not my eternal parents. The soul is related only to God. You are my shelter and You are my everything, hence I shall come with you." Shree Krishna says in the Gita:

māmev ye prapadyante māyāmetām taranti te

"The one who comes under my shelter alone and surrenders completely to me, I will free him from the clutches of Maya. If you do not apply the word only, then I am not responsible." 'Ananya' implies that the mind should be exclusively attached to God and nowhere else. 'Else' refers to the realm of Maya. Maya has three modes - sattva gun (mode of goodness), rajo gun (mode of passion) and tamo gun (mode of ignorance). A person of sattva gun is considered to be a good person. A person of rajo gun is considered to be a normal person and the one with tamogun is considered to be a bad person.
A person who drinks or is a thief or has a devious mind and eats meat is considered a sinner. Your mind should not be attached to such a person since he is tamsik. Let us say that a person's father is tamasik by nature, yet he loves him. The son will attain a tamsik destiny after his death, as a result of the love for his father. This is the law of karma. Similarly, if one attaches the mind to a rajo gun mother, then one will attain rajo gun after death. If one is attached to a sattva guni person, then one will attain heaven which is again transitory. All these three modes come under the category of Maya.

The nature and intensity of attachment does not matter. It could be love for parents, love for your spouse or a child. It could even be love for friends or an inanimate object. After death, we will attain the object or the person we are attached to, along with its nature (gun).

If we attach our mind in celestial gods then we will not attain the supreme God. Yet, this is what we all do in today's world. Some people worship God, but in addition, they also worship celestial gods or worldly beings, and therefore never attain supreme God, Shree Krishna.

In the beginning, we mentioned that material objects and souls who have not attained God are classified as mayic. Now we have learnt that the realm of Maya includes material objects, souls (not God-realized) and celestial abodes, including heaven.

We have only one mind and that should be focused on the Divine, and subjects related to the Divine only. There should be no place for anything or anyone else related to the mayic modes of sattva, rajas, or tamas. If we detach ourselves from all of these three, then our devotion will be exclusive and will be considered as 'single minded devotion' or 'Ananya'.

Our heart is the temple of God and only He must reside in it. Observe the temples in every city. We place God's idol in the centre and that place is revered as highly sacred. The priest ensures that the surroundings are very clean and tidy. Compare that to the temple in our hearts. We want God to reside along with dirty mayic personalities. God says "Who is this?" We reply, "This is my father, mother and son" God says, "No. If you want them, then I will not come inside. I will stay in your heart only if you keep mayic things away."

The reason why we have not attained God till now is that we have not tried to practice 'ananya bhakti'. We keep telling God that He is also ours, whereas he expects exclusive devotion. We shed tears for God and Guru, but we also shed tears while bidding goodbye to the newly wed daughter at home. We shed tears when our children die. This proves that we are attached to and love people other than God.

This material world is made of Maya and this body is also material. This material world is made to sustain our material body. For the eternal soul, devotion to God and Guru is essential. Eyes have vision and ears are made for listening. If we attempt to hear with our eyes, it is foolish and an impossible task. Similarly, happiness of the soul is not in this material world which is a source of darkness, whereas God is the source of light. Darkness and light cannot co-exist.

We are attached to this world because we have forgotten our real identity. We are eternal souls and souls are servants of God. Just like a machine in a car's engine. If a single wire is not in its place or the battery fails, the car stops working. Similarly, if our mind gets attached to this material world even for a second then we will not achieve our goal.

Let us use another example. Our mind is like a dirty cloth that has accumulated filth since innumerable lifetimes. Our aim is to wash it and make it completely dirt free. If we wash it with fresh, dirt free water, it will become clean. But, if we wash it with dirty water, the cloth will become dirtier. What do we mean by 'clean' or 'dirty' water? All mayic objects are considered dirty in the Divine realm. Only elements related to God are considered clean. Primarily, God and Guru are the purest and Divine personalities.

Hence, God asks us to be 'Ananya'. To love God and God alone is what 'Ananya' means.

Question:

After death someone becomes spirit, some go to heaven and some attain God.  What is the secret of this diversity?
Answer:
This is the judgment of God.  In this world, God has given every soul the free will to perform the actions it chooses.  We are all tiny parts of God, and we possess the independence to act as we wish.  God never forces His will on us.  God's job is just like that of a referee.  For example, there is an umpire in a match of cricket.  Eleven players come for fielding and two for batting.  Along with the players, two umpires also come out on field.  They do not play or interfere in the game.  They simply stand there, note the actions of the players, and pass decisions.  "No ball!"  "Lbw!"  "Four runs!"  "Six runs!"  There is no partiality in it.  The players are free to play as they wish.  The umpires merely pass judgment.  Similarly, God too acts as the referee in our lives.
God has given us human body.  He has also given us the power of knowledge, so that we may use it to know Him.  Now, if someone uses this power of knowledge merely in procuring and eating delicacies to gratify the palate, God will say, "If your only goal was to eat good food, then this human body is not fit for you.  For this, a body of a pig will be perfect.  I'll give you a body of pig next time, so that you can be completely absorbed in the activity of your choice."
If someone uses the free will to put an end to the body, and commits suicide, then God says, "The pain you were getting was a result of your karmas, and it was your duty to bear it.  You have wrongfully put an end to your body.  So now you will not get another body for some time.  You will become a ghost, who has no gross body."
If someone uses the power of knowledge in pursuing devotion, but is unable to reach the goal in this lifetime, then God will give that soul a human body in next life also, so that it soul may continue its journey to God.
God does three things: He gives us the power to act, He notes our actions, and He gives us the results of our actions.  The soul's destination after death is decided by its own actions.  This is called the law of karma.  We can know its broad principles, but nobody can understand its intricacies, and determine what the exact fruit will be, except God.

The Goal of Human Life!

It is a fact that every individual performs actions with a specific aim. No one can remain inactive even for a moment and no action is performed without a purpose.
The Darśhan Śhāstra declares-
prayojanamanuddiśhya mando̓pi na pravartate
However, we can say that every individual performs various actions every moment with a single purpose. It may appear strange but it is true. Some do good deeds and some perform bad ones. In reality, everyone performs actions that give them happiness.
Like an evil person finds happiness in harming others, a Saint performs actions for the welfare of others which give Him happiness. The motive behind achieving wealth, health, wife, son, fame, beauty is one - HAPPINESS. This proves that without any teaching or training every individual wants happiness and nobody wants sorrow, grief or pain because -
ānando brahmeti vyajānāt (ved)
Happiness, Bliss, peace are other names or synonyms for God.  Now arises a question. What is the relationship between our desire for happiness and God being Bliss personified?  Yes, there is a relation.
īśhvar  añśh jīv avināśhī (rāmāya)
The relation is that every individual soul is an eternal part of God, and God is Bliss Personified. Therefore being an eternal part of Him, every individual soul naturally seeks happiness.  No soul can ever wish for sorrow.
Since infinite lifetimes, all of us are searching happiness in this material world but according to our scriptures (Vedas) and our personal experiences, there is no doubt that worldly happiness is short lived. It is finite and illusive. When we eat a rasgulla (an Indian sweet) for the first time, we experience great pleasure. But if someone asks us to keep eating the same sweet, we feel like vomiting. So if there is pleasure in rasgulla or any such object, then we should experience this pleasure for ever. But this is not the case. Why don't we derive constant happiness from that object? In the same manner, the pleasure from wealth, spouse, children, food etc. keeps on fluctuating and finally comes to an end.
So why haven't we attained true happiness till now? Because we have not understood, realized and decided the true nature of happiness. Where is that kind of happiness? How can we attain it? Surprisingly, despite our continuous efforts to achieve happiness, we have not understood what and where we will get this happiness. Happiness is that which is unlimited, ever increasing and ever lasting. Sorrow cannot overccome it, like darkness cannot overcome light.  So where is this kind of happiness? The answer to this question can be categorized into two areas (which are intensely debated) - materialism and spirituality. According to materialism, there is no entity or authority called God and one will get happiness through material objects. Whereas, according to spirituality, only God is Bliss and by attaining God we can be happy for eternity. There is no other way to the attainment of happiness and removal of pain and suffering.
raso vai sa
The Vedas declares that even the most intellectual cannot comprehend God because He is beyond our material senses and by the grace of God even a fool can know God. Thus, every individual seeks happiness and since God is Bliss, everyone is a seeker of God. Every person will work continuously till he attains true happiness and peace.
The materialists deny the existence of God, but they can only claim that there is no entity called God if according to the scriptures, we do not attain God even after surrendering to a Guru and performing devotion.
The conclusion is that we must believe in the existence of God. But a question arises: what is our purpose of worshipping Him? Yes, there is a purpose. We are all selfish in nature, and whoever satisfies our self-interests, we get attached to that person. We all long for unlimited, everlasting happiness and that happiness is only in God. All our self interests will be fulfilled by worshipping God, and without understanding Him we cannot attain true happiness Therefore, having a human body, if we do not understand God, that will be our greatest mistake. We would have to suffer in the cycle of 8.4 millions species of life, because only in the human form, we can attain God and acquire the knowledge of God, to attain our ultimate goal of Divine Bliss.

JAGADGURU KRIPALU UNIVERSITY OF SPIRITUAL SCIENCES SUMMARY PROJECT REPORT

THE MISSION:
Eternally liberated Divine personalities sometimes descend upon the earth for the welfare of humankind. Jagadguru Shree Kripalu ji Maharaj is such a Divine personality. "Maharaj ji", as he is lovingly called by his devotees, was born on the auspicious night of Sharad Poornima in 1922, in the village Mangarh, near Allahabad.
In January 1957, Shree Kripalu ji Maharaj gave a profound series of lectures at the invitation of the Kashi Vidvat Parishad, a body of 500 of the topmost Vedic scholars of India who collectively represent the seat of spiritual learning.
Shree Maharaj ji spoke for ten days revealing the secrets of the Hindu scriptures. He reconciled the apparent contradictions between the various Vedic scriptures, and the differences between the views of the previous Jagadgurus, to reveal the true path to God-realization for the welfare of all humankind.
With profound admiration, they unanimously acclaimed him as Jagadguru, the Spiritual Master of the world.  They further added that he was "Jagadguruttam" or Supreme amongst all Jagadgurus. Among the various accolades that they showered upon him was "Bhakti-Yog Rasavatar", or the personification of the Bliss of devotion.
After accepting the title of Jagadguru, Kripaluji Maharaj traveled throughout the country for fourteen years. He would deliver month-long discourses in each city, in which he would unravel the mysteries of the scriptures before tens of thousands of people, who would throng the venue for a glimpse of this extraordinary scholar and Saint whose words left them spellbound.
Kripaluji Maharaj has written thousands of inspiring verses revealing the Divine pastimes of Radha Krishna. Shree Maharajji has also revealed a vast wealth of literature for devotees across the world to understand the true philosophy of Divine Love and help them all in path towards God realization.
Shree Maharajji is fifth original Jagadguru in the history of India, and has profoundly influenced the lives of many people around the world with his unmatched mastery of all Vedic scriptures and texts. His divine lectures have inspired lakhs of people on the path of Bhakti for the last 50 years and continue to do so. Shree Maharajji regularly speaks on popular channels in India and abroad.
Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat is a huge international spiritual organization, with branches in most states of India, and many countries around the world. It has large ashrams at Mangarh, Vrindaban, Barsana, and Texas, USA. These ashrams are vibrant centers of spiritual training and social welfare work.
Jagadguru Kripalu Yog Trust is a sister organization of the Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat and has been established for the dissemination of Spiritual – Vedic and Yogic – Sciences, to enable healthy living at the physical, mental, intellectual and spiritual level.
Swami Mukundananda, a senior preacher of Jagadguru Shree Kripalu Ji Maharaj, is the president of Jagadguru Kripalu Yog Trust.  He completed his B.Tech from IIT Delhi and MBA from IIM Calcutta.
Though he briefly spent his time in the corporate world at one of India’s top industrial houses, his longing for God was so strong that he renounced his career and began traveling throughout India as a sanyasi.  Ultimately, his search took him to the lotus feet of his Spiritual Master, Jagadguru Shri Kripaluji Maharaj.  He was overawed by the unfathomable scriptural knowledge and ocean of Divine love that he saw manifest in his Gurudev.
Under the guidance of Jagadguru Shri Kripaluji Maharaj, he practiced intense ‘sadhana’ while residing at the ashram.  He also extensively studied the Vedic scriptures, and the Indian and Western systems of philosophy.  On completion of his studies, his Guru entrusted him with the key task of propagating the ancient knowledge about the Eternal Truth, the world over.
Ever since he became Maharajji’s disciple and a preacher, Swamiji has traveled far and wide, awakening hundreds of thousands of Seekers. Using perfect logic, and a simple-yet-scientific approach, Swamiji offers new ways of understanding and applying the knowledge of the Scriptures (from the Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavatam, Puranas, Bhagavad Geeta, and other Eastern and Western scriptures) in our daily lives.
He has preached extensively in many states across India as well as different countries across the world. Swami Mukundananda has successfully established a huge network of ‘spiritual centers’ in different cities / towns across each state.
Swami Mukundananda has now been delivering religious discourses for the last twenty-four years, as a preacher of the Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat. Swami Mukundananda is the co-founder and President of the Jagadguru Kripalu Yog trust.

What is virtue and what is sin?

Question:
We have heard many times that if we do punya we go to heaven and if we do paap we go to hell. So, what are those paap and punya?

Answer by Swamiji:
Our scriptures have formulated code of conduct according to class and stage of life called "Varnashram Dharm". This code of conduct have an extensive set of rules like always speak truth, never lie, give respect to your parents etc. You can get detail information about it from scriptures like Manu Smriti, Mimamsha, Mahabharat, etc. There are millions of rules. If you are to keep your feet on ground, chant this mantra, chant this one while bathing etc. But the main purpose of all these rules and regulations are to make you work in accordance to the scriptures. If you work in accordance to scripture it will be called punya (virtue) and if you go against, it will be called paap (sin).
But there is one more theory that is the theory of Karm Yog. What are you supposed to do in Karm Yog? Not much. Do whatever is required in your present situation. If you are in family, look after it. If you are a husband, earn. If you are a wife, take care of house. Perform these basic duties. But, while performing these duties, detach your mind from these worldly objects and transfer your attachment to God. Lord Krishna said in Geeta:
manmanā bhava madbhakto madyājī maṁ namaskuru |
māmevaiṣhyasi satyaṁ te pratijāne priyosi me ||
Give your mind to Me, be devoted to Me, worship Me and bow to Me. Doing so, you will come to Me alone, I truly promise you; for, you are exceptionally dear to Me.

Jagadguru Shree Kripaluji Maharaj has written in his Bhakti Shatak:
man hari meṁ tan jagat meṁ, karmayog tehi jān |
tan hari meṁ man jagat meṁ, yah mahān ajñān ||

Karm Yog is when your mind is fully observed in Shree Krishna while performing duties from your body. But, opposite of this, performing devotional formalities with body and attaching mind on world is greatest ignorance.

So this called Karm Yog - mind in God body in world. Rest are- action accordance to the code of conduct set by scriptures is virtue and going against them is sin.

Little Krishna asks Mother Yashoda, "Why can't I eat Mud?"

Little Krishna asks Mother Yashoda, "Why can't I eat Mud?"

"Payo Bhal Guru Gyan Maiya Mai Toh"

It is one of nectarous childhood pastime of Shree Krishna written by Jagadguru Shree Kripaluji Maharaj. In this padh (couplet) little Krishna is telling Maiya Yashoda an incident about meeting a Guru-Muni Durvasa. Quoting Muni Durvasa, little Kanaiya asks maiya that if all of us have come from mud (earth) and goes back to mud why can't He eat it? To this mischievous query mother Yashoda gives such bizzare answer that Shree Krishna vows never to eat mud, again.

In this video, Swamiji sings and explains this sweet nectarous childhood pastime of Shree Krishna.
